When Appliance Rentals Go Bad In Windsor, LaSalle, Tecumseh, ON, and the Surrounding Areas

You’ve heard of them, or have probably seen them around your neighbourhood at some point. Door-to-door salesmen trying to get you into a contract for heating and cooling appliances. These sales agents and their contracts would often claim that you’ll save money on utilities with new appliances, save costs in maintenance, and have them more regularly serviced. But in reality, there were so many complaints that the government banned door-to-door sales of certain goods and services in March of 2018.

Appliances/services included in the ban:

  • Furnaces
  • Air Conditioners
  • Air Cleaners
  • Air Purifiers
  • Water Heaters
  • Water Treatment Devices
  • Water Purifiers
  • Water Softeners
  • Duct Cleaning Services
  • Any good or service that performs or combines one or more of the above functions

Even though these door-to-door sales tactics were banned, Canadians are still feeling the fallout of these agreements.

Most recently in the news, CBC reported that a woman was given a bill of $32,000 to break one of these rental contracts. Tracy Spence was hooked into purchasing new appliances under a contract. The salesperson promised she would see savings by switching from her old oil furnace to a new gas furnace, but the high rental fees prevented that from ever happening. Afterward, Tracy says she “felt so completely stupid” for entering into the contract, but had some pressures and stresses that led to her making a quick decision. They weren’t able to report the specifics of the resolution because of a confidentiality agreement. But we do hope that Tracy was able to find a good solution to her issue.

We know that not all rental agreements are predatory, or inherently bad for the customer. However, it’s important to read the fine print and completely understand the contract you’re signing. Tracy’s situation should serve as a precautionary tale for anyone looking to upgrade the appliances in their home.

Our best advice is to find a company you can trust that has years of proven service and a good track record with previous clients. Obviously, we’re referring to ourselves here 😉. Regardless of the direction you go, it’s always important to find a reputable company that sells quality appliances and is able to install and service them professionally,
